Greater Detroit Community Outreach Center was created out of the need of getting parents involved in the sex education process of their children. In 1977, the Detroit Public Schools attempted to implement a health education program that included birth control and human sexuality information. This was immediately met with resentment by parents and community groups who felt parents were being excluded. Although many groups tried to help parents see the need for the health education curriculum, it was not until Greater Detroit Community Outreach center introduced its one to one in-home family sex education program did parents overwhelmingly accept the Detroit Public School’s health education program. Here, parents along with their children would be given the information in their home together with a representative from the center. Parents then would sign their permission for their children to take the health class that included birth control information. Out of this need the Greater Detroit Community Outreach center has lasted over four decades (42 years) servicing the needs of citizens in the Greater Detroit community. The center has received a diverse means of funding that included government concerns such as the State of Michigan and City of Detroit. Private Foundations such as Kellogg, Skillman provided support. Also, private corporations such as IBM and Marshal Fields provided funding at various periods of time. Presently Greater Detroit provides weekly fund raisers along with other activities designed to keep the center servicing the community. The Center tracks the effectiveness of the service in helping to prevent to prevent teen parenthood through the home prevention counseling project. We are very proud to show that this one to one in home preventive counseling program has not only serviced over 100,000 thousand families but carry a 99% success ratio (Families who received counseling, the children did not become teen parents by age 18). This program continues to stand the test of time. Below is our data files and production history.
